MDL Laboratory

Cytology
Cytotechnology specializes in the microscopic evaluation of cellular samples. Cytotechnologists are involved in diagnosing:
Infectious disease
Benign tumors
Precancerous lesions
Cancer

ThinPrep Imaged Pap tests are the most common specimen type submitted to MDL cytology department. This computerized ThinPrep(R) Imaging System with its Dual ReviewTM technology has demonstrated an increase in sensitivity and specificity in Pap test interpretations. Our cytotechnologists screen monolayer ThinPrep Pap slides and conventional method pap smears. These test help in the early detection of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the cervix.

Along with screening for lesions, cytotechnologists will report:
Sexually transmitted diseases such as Herpes, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and Trichomonas Vaginalis
Infections such as bacteria and yeast

MDL's Cytology department performs screening on several non-gynecological specimens that come from the breast, lung, or urinary tract. These smears consist of direct smears, fine needle aspirations (FNA), and various body fluid collections.

Histology
MDL's histology department professionals and ASCP certified pathologists have extensive experience preparing tissues for microscopic examination.

Our histology specialists:
Submit the total or selected piece of tissue presented for examination to a series of processes including fixation, dehydration, clearing, embedding, cutting, and staining.
Examine all specimens submitted in 10% buffered formalin.
Provide reports on most specimens within 72 hours of arrival at the laboratory.
Typically complete requests for rush cases within 24 to 48 hours. MDL's ASCP certified pathologists call the results to the doctor's office as soon as they are available.
Report tissue and cytology correlations that are available for gynecological cases.
